Austenland by Shannon Hale, copyright 2007
Jane Hayes is a graphic designer in New York City with a scandalous secret: she is obsessed with Mr. Darcy, specifically the Colin Firth variety, all wet shirts and smoldering eyes. No man can compare, and most guys she dates are rejected before time for tea. Too selfish. Not a gentleman. Mr. Darcy would *never* snort when he laughs.
When Jane's rich and perceptive aunt bequeaths to her a three-week stay at a Regency-era theme park in England that caters to Jane Austen fans, our heroine Jane hopes to kick her Darcy habit for good. But, surrounded by men in breeches bent on fulfilling her every fantasy, Jane's inner battles soon take center stage: what is real and what is fantasy? Who is she and what does she really want? And is everyone acting a part in this dramedy?
Well-written, fast-paced and loaded with wit and humor, Shannon Hale's cast of characters constantly charms without ever straying into the sickeningly sweet. From the funny prologue to the satisfying ending, Austenland delivers a thoughtful, though lighthearted look at relationships and being true to oneself. A must for Austen aficionados and those also secretly obsessed with Mr. Darcy, the book will also please anyone who has ever struggled to determine what she wants out of life and relationships.

Sorry, Keri! Firth/Darcy was merely the hook to persuade female Austen fans to read this book. The Regency theme park setting is implausible and chaotic, with each character playing the part of two (the real person and the theme park persona). Who exactly is falling in love with whom? For me, none of the characters comes to life, not even the heroine.
