Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich by Adam Rex, copyright 2006
Tired of all those huggy, kissy, so-very-sweet, I-love-you, snuggly books?
Then pick up a copy of Adam Rex's hilarious and incredibly illustrated book of monster poems, which boasts the full title: Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich and Other Stories You're Sure to Like Because They're All About Monsters, and Some of Them are Also About Food. You Like Food, Don't You? Well, All Right Then.
From the crazy copyright page depicting "The Invisible Man Makes a Snow Angel, 1897" to the recurring plight of the poor Phantom of the Opera, Rex's collection is a funny, page-turning romp through a Who's Who list of famous monsters: The Creature from the Black Lagoon, Wolfman, Dracula, and more. The poem titles alone elicit a chuckle, but my favorite has to be "Godzilla Pooped on My Honda: An Asian Delight!" Clever word play, twisted story lines, colorful illustrations bursting with energy combine to make this laugh-out-loud book a hit with kids of all ages year-round, to be read with extra enthusiasm around Halloween.
